I *heart* the library

When I was a child, going to a bookstore was my greatest joy. I still recall walking up to the little B.Dalton in my hometown. I adored the smell, the stacks of books, and the turnstile thingy that held the collection of Berenstain Bear Books. I could be sure that my parent's would let me get the latest one.

The next runner up to that, was going to the library. We went frequently, and I relished it. The children's section in my library had a huge coffee-table style bin, with chairs pulled up along the sides. It had hundred's of books just tossed in. I would dig in and sort through those for what felt like hours. A sea of delicious stories.

Fast forward. I'm still a reader. A huge reader, and now I'm a writer too. (I wrote as a child, but I'm not counting that.) My point is that, now I feel a responsibility to the publishing community. To authors, which I love. I want to buy their books, and support them. Keep them writing for as long as they're willing.

There's a catch. I read a LOT. My budget doesn't allow me to support every author with every book. Heck, sometimes the budget doesn't allow me to support any authors, or any books. (Or even eating out for heaven's sake.)

So I go to the library, and sometimes I feel a little guilty about it. Don't get me wrong, libraries are wonderful places. But when I sit for three hours pounding away at my laptop on a manuscript that I dream of becoming a NY Times bestseller (don't we all?), and then take my butt to the library and pick up 10 new books to read, I feel a little hypocritical. Why? I don't know. It's just my issue.

Here is how I deal with this feeling.

1. I remember that authors are readers, and more than likely LOVE libraries also. They get it. In fact, about four years ago, I loved a book so much that I felt compelled to email the author. My guilt must have been great, because like an idiot I revealed to her that I got her book from the library, but I would be sure to purchase subsequent books because I enjoyed it so much! (Idiot much??)  Do you know what she responded to me?? That she was a librarian, and LOVED libraries? Who'd have thought?? :) I remember laughing out loud at my stupidity.

2. Libraries PURCHASE books. I don't know the in's and outs of this, but I know they pay money for them. Does it count toward bestseller lists etc? Not sure, but it has to count for something. Please chime in if you know!

3. I talk a lot about the books I read. Everyone in my sphere knows this, for the most part. I know for a fact, that my constant book talk has sold a lot of books. If I check out a book and love it, I can almost guarantee that either my sister, my sister in law, my mother, a friend, or maybe someone on this blog might purchase it. In fact, I sat and book chatted with a fellow mom at a baseball game in the bleachers about some books I loved, and she literally bought them on her phone from amazon as we spoke. Powerful stuff, friends!

Now someday, I would love nothing more than to have a beautiful room like this. Or five.

And to be clear, I still have way more than the average person's share of purchased books. Boxes and shelves full. Stacks. But until I have the means, (and maybe I never will) I will be using the library. When my book comes out, you can feel good about checking it out at your library. But please tell everyone you know about it!! :)

Summer, Insanity, and EDITS!

School has been out for a few weeks now. We're all still alive. Why is that relevant, you ask? Well, I live with three young boys. Three. Summer is tough. Boys like to hit, run, crash, bang, yell, fight, make messes, and drive their mother crazy. They are also sweet, loving, adorable, creative, smart, and love to take care of their mother. So I'll keep them, but man it's hard day to day.

Throw in all the other drama that being an adult includes, like bills, cleaning, dogs, spouses, appointments, work, dinner, etc, and it's easily a recipe for chaos. Does this all sound familiar? I know I'm not alone when I talk about the crazy.

For us aspiring writers there is an added stress. We want to fit writing, editing, query, (insert wherever you are in the game), into the mix. God help us all, something's got to give. Unfortunately it's my emotional well-being. Oh, and my laundry pile, but that's another matter.

Summer. Ugh. If I looked hot in shorts or bathing suits, it MIGHT help my  Summer blahs. It's not meant to be.

I'll share with you a few things that have been helping me stay sane.

1.  Reading. Duh.  Reading is up there on my "essential to survival" list. Lately I've read some good ones!!

If you're into adult romance, Julie James is fantastic. Contemporary and hot! :)

This morning I finished LEGEND, by Marie Lu. AWESOME!!! I absolutely loved June and Day. I seriously wish this would become a movie.

2. Instagram No explanation needed, right?

3. Making unhealthy snacks. Specifically things like, Chex Muddy Buddies, chocolate chip, and no-bake cookies.

4. Writing. Yes, my manuscript is giving me lots of joy right now. I'm in the middle of a full edit and then will be sending it out into the world. I'm loving this process, although it's overwhelming and I'm obsessive about it. In about a week, I'm going to have the whole thing printed and bound. EEK. Does anyone else do that??

Happy Friday everybody!! :)

Book Review, and I'm speechless.

The other day I read someone's blog ( I swear it was Peggy Eddelman) that mentioned how hard it was to start writing after you haven't been writing for awhile. Like you have to start over. I think she was referring to blogging, if I recall, and I'm feeling that way now.

I believe I did this last year after A-Z. I quit blogging for a while. It's not that it's even that hard, I'm just done. It also had to do with getting requests for materiel at a conference (YAY!!!) and the grueling work that has been. That being said, here I am.

I do manage, however, no matter how busy I am, to read. Reading is my drug, and I'm completely addicted with no desire to cure myself.

I JUST finished The Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor.

~Insert delightful squealing!!!!!!!~

It must be known that I went into this completely biased. I have adored Laini through the Internets for awhile. I have a little bit of a writerly crush on her, if you will. It would have had to suck balls for me to have been annoyed with this book. The beauty? It SO did not sucks balls. (That was horribly graphic and disgusting, but I won't apologize.)

This book was AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I am not a reader of fantasy, low or high, but I'll be darned if i couldn't have read this book all day, every day. Good gracious. (please note that I don't declare myself above reading any genre, I can and have, loved and appreciated them all...there are just some I'm naturally drawn too more frequently than others.)

Back to the book. Her words are so delicious I could eat them with a spoon. There were several sentences I reread several times, just to sit in awe of their beauty. I would LOVE to hear this read aloud. The plot was fresh and imaginative, the characters vivid, and the world was FANTASTIC. I now have Prague and Morocco on my WTGT (want to go to) list. It is definitely one of those books that makes me ACHE for a sequel.

I was so happy to finally get to this book, and now I'm sad that it's over. But what a wonderful feeling that is to have about a book. I love it. Has anyone read her Dreamdark books? I'm thinking about reading those to my boys. I've heard they are fantastic.

So...I'm back from the conference.

And it was AMAZING! Lots of good info, snacks and networking.

Best of all, you ask? I pitched. Three times. I was very proud of myself! :)

The result? Well, lets say I need to polish up this manuscript immediately! Yay!! Thanks for all of the encouragement from everyone! I'm going to be super busy for a little bit!

Z Zipping up the loose ends

What a month, ya'll!! Wow. I did A-Z last year, but I skipped some days. Not this year! This year I did every single letter. It feels good. I have a sense of accomplishment about it.

I met a lot of really great bloggers that I will continue to read and I hope many of you will continue to pop in here too.

My dedication to blogging has its ups and down's, but I really enjoyed this challenge. Hopefully by the time A-Z comes around in 2013 I'll be in an even better place in my writing career. I hope you all will, too! :)

In the mean time, I'm getting my household prepared for a few days of no mommy! Any other mom's know what a chore this is?? I completely set them up. Food has to be bought, prepared and prepped. Lists and instructions must be written, insurance cards arranged. Sheesh!! But it's worth it!
(Especially when I find out my agent pitch interview is now TWO agent pitch interviews!! SQUEEE!!)

Happy Monday!!

Y Ya gotta be kidding me!!!!

Busy day today— hence the late post. But I had to share a quick crazy story!!

This morning I had a photo session with the nicest couple. They were young and still newlyweds for all intents and purposes. We were just getting started and excited, as I took them to one of my recent fav locations.
It's an abandoned farm lot off a main highway and it has an old farmhouse, and several out buildings including a beautiufl old barn. I'm not able to date barns, but this one seems old! Anyway, the place is so long vacated the weeds and grass grow up to the roof like a jungle around the house. I've shot there several times this spring and last fall.

I love shooting around the barn and the lot is messy but good for photos. I can tell that people dump things, and probably teens hang out because I've noticed "new" stuff laying around before, but I wasn't prepared for the man that was with me to say, "Someone is sleeping in there!". Both the wife and I almost emptied our bladder on that note. I thought he was seeing someone sleeping in this old barn. But when he pointed, sure enough someone had hung a bunch of old clothes on a tree limb coming from one of the dilapidated barn's window. My gut just told me a homeless person was inside there. FREAKY!  We all kind of looked at each other deciding what to do. We took a few more photos, but no one could relax, I kept jumping at every sound, and looking for eyeballs peering out of the barn windows.

The same barn, just a month ago.

The scariest thing???? I've been to that spot shooting senior portraits with teens!! ACK!! No more!!

Happy Saturday everybody!!
